DELEGATE REPORT

2007 AMT EDUCATION AND BUSINESS MEETING

The annual education and business meeting was held in Orlando, Florida, July 9th through 14th.  Our hotel was on the Disney property with all of its grandeur.  Our hotel and the surrounding grounds were moments away from all of the excitement of Disney World.  Many AMT members brought their families to vacation  while they attended the educational sessions.

It was so exciting to have 122 first time attendees with 34 of them coming from the Southern District.  Our district is always well represented by members and several of those were recipients of National Awards.  Everett Bloodworth, M.T. (AMT), Southern District Councilor and Editor of the Bluegrass Tec h was named Editor of the Year.  An award that was well deserved, after years of serving Kentucky as Editor.  I was awarded the Medical Technologists of the Year and was so honored to join this very elite group of members.

The educational sessions were informative and timely with something for all of our members to enjoy and take information back to their work place.  Each year the Convention Committee and the AMT home office prepare the meeting with lots of education and fun events.  The State Baskets were a hit again this year.  Each state prepares a basket of items from their state and a drawing is held at the Welcome Party. It is always great to win, but getting the items home on a plane is another issue.  To be honest, I pray that I will not win each year.

The annual business meeting is held on Friday.  The emphasis is always on reports from committee chairs and election of officers.  Legislative reports revealed that AMT settled a lawsuit with AAMA concerning use of Registered Medical Assistant.  AAMA tried to have a bill passed that would not allow the RMA (AMT) to use the words registered or certified.  When AMT questioned this decision with a suit filed, AAMA dropped the bill.  It is always very important for all of our members to be aware of any legislative issues.  The 2008 National meeting will be held in Providence Rhode Island.  This promises to be another great meeting.  The dates are July 7th through the 12th.  We have a special room rate of $119 per night.

I could not end this report without mentioning the wonderful family atmosphere.  Over the many year, I have made life long friends that have come to be my AMT family.  This year, Kay Fergason, Florida and I celebrated 25 years as AMT room mates.  Kay has been a friend, mentor and advisor through the years.  The Florida State Society presented me with an angel to thank me for putting up with Kay” for all of these years.  Actually, she is a guardian angel for me and many of the AMT members.  Many of our friends feel that Kay is the poster child for the

“Pride of the Profession”

As always, it was indeed an honor to represent Kentucky at our National Meeting.  I will be giving a more detailed report at the Fall 2007 meeting.  Thank you again for allowing me to represent our state.

Julia Hardcastle, M.T. (AMT)

69th Annual Educational Meeting Orlando, Florida

The Keynote Speaker, Mary Feeley, CSP spoke about HDD (humor deficit disorder) I
think we all suffer from this disorder or know someone who does as we get lost in the
daily grind of our jobs. I learned we just need to laugh at ourselves sometimes. The
seminar I enjoyed the most was on Blood Transfusion Reactions (very educational)
TRALI was the hot topic, ways to prevent this reaction. Tuesday night’s Beach Party was
rained out and moved indoors but this couldn’t dampen our spirits. It was a great
opportunity to reunite with old AMT friends and family and build new friendships. How
lucky we are to have in Kentucky, The Editor of the Year Everett Bloodworth and The
Technologist of the Year Julia Hardcastle as our mentors blazing the trails ahead of us. I
look forward to seeing you at the 70th Annual Educational Meeting in Providence Rhode
Island.

Lisa Marie Parker, RMA

DELEGATE REPORT

As a first timer and a delegate, it was a very good experience.  I got to see how AMT is run and how many people are with the organization.  I was very surprised to see that many people from different countries.  I did not realize that AMT was an international organization.  I meet so many nice people that I can’t remember all of the names  They were all very willing to help me in any way.  I had a great time and hope to do it again.
